Rolls-Royce's coach building division Mulliner Park Ward was keeping up the tradition of producing hand built convertibles. To meet European laws governing the size of exposed components several changes became necessary including a modified hood and a retractable Flying Lady mascot; obeying emission legislation in Japan as well as in the United States had resulted in fuel injection been fitted. A variety of minor alterations (e.g. aluminium radiator, external oil cooler) rounded up the process of modernization which was heralded by the new name Rolls-Royce Corniche II. Cars destined for North America were fitted with driver's airbag but lacked the anti lock brakes fitted on cars supplied in the UK, Europe and the Middle East. The production line for the Corniche had been transferred from Hythe Road, London to Crewe prior to the Hythe Road factory's closure in 1991.
